So instead of the Boys on the Bus of the Peter Gzowski era, we have the Boys under the Bus. But he starts saying, ‘I’m taking responsibility for this’ and at the end he’s saying ‘wait a minute boys, I’ve been here 18, 20 months, can’t blame me!’ even though he was part of the organization. You can say, it was Seinfeld-ian, it was about nothing. Michael Farber: You can look at the Craig MacTavish press briefing two ways. Craig MacTavish made his decision then, he was going to change coaches, he brought in Dallas Eakins, it has not worked, and this team has been in a freefall since then. You go back two years when Ralph Krueger was coaching this team, they were far more disciplined, they they were far more successful, they were heading it seemed in the right direction. Steve Simmons: Where I don’t agree with you is I think this team is worse than it has been at any point through all these collapses that we’ve seen. ![]() And that is where Edmonton is, because a trade right now is a trade of low tide assets, and firing the coach doesn’t get you anywhere at all. Basically what Craig MacTavish said is that ‘we have to rebuild the rebuild of the rebuild of the rebuild’. He can’t walk out and blame Kevin Lowe, even though he sorta did he can blame Steve Tambellini without saying his name, and that was a big thing - the poor drafting outside the first round undermines everything we do, he said. At some point somebody should have to pay for this. The team this year is I think better in some ways, but is still prone to the catastrophic error, you can still see the shoulders start to slump. Other than walking out and committing organizational seppuku, there was no way to do it, right? This team has been so bad for so long, with so many false dawns and so much false hope. Did the PR exercise work? Bruce Arthur: I’m not sure any PR exercise could have. ![]() Dave Hodge: In Edmonton, things are so bad, somebody had to face the music, and GM Craig MacTavish - or somebody else - decided it should be him.
